Australian Business Indicators survey, September quarter
Today’s indicators were broadly consistent with the outlook presented in our Q3 GDP preview. Non-farm private inventories will detract 0.5ppts from economic growth in Q3. Sales edged higher while wages growth stepped down. The fall in non-mining profits was larger than anticipated driven by a few outliers, including other household services.
Private non-farm business inventories declined 0.9% in the September quarter, following a 0.5% increase (revised from an initial estimate of 0.1%) in the June quarter. As a result, private non-farm business inventories are expected to detract 0.5ppts from economic growth in the September quarter.
The outcome was weaker than the fall of 0.5% expected by Westpac and much worse than the 0.2% decline expected by the market. As flagged in Friday’s National Accounts preview for Q3 (see here), we expect total inventories to detract 0.4ppts from growth in Q3. Today’s outcome is broadly consistent with our expectations. We will receive the full picture when we get a read on public inventories in tomorrow’s release.
Looking at the industries, the fall in inventories was broad based. As we noted in Friday’s preview, the decline in consumption and intermediate imports over Q3, combined with stable private demand suggested that businesses were running down inventories, particularly across the consumer sectors. Today’s release confirmed this with falls recorded in accommodation and food services (-4.4%qtr), retail trade (-1.4%qtr) and wholesale trade (-0.2%qtr). Inventories in the mining industry also declined as expected (-2.0%qtr), given the boost to mining export volumes over the quarter.
Total sale volumes edged 0.2% higher in the September quarter, following an increase of 0.3% in the June quarter. Sales volumes were 0.2% higher in year-ended terms, the first positive annual rise since the December quarter 2023. This is consistent with our view that private demand stabilised higher in Q3.
Non-mining sales were flat in the September quarter, following a gain of 0.2% in the June quarter. Sales in this sector were also flat over the year to the September quarter. Note that this measure of sales does not include non-market industries (most notably education and health) that have been outperforming. We expect these industries to contribute to growth in Q3.
Consumer industries continued to be soft. There were falls recorded in accommodation and food services (-0.4%qtr) and other household services (-0.8%qtr), with sales in the retail and wholesale trade industries stabilising. There was also a step down in business services, with professional services down 1.0%qtr, administration and other services down 1.0% and manufacturing down 0.8%qtr. This was partly offset by a construction (+1.0%qtr) and finance and insurance (+1.0%qtr).
On the other hand, mining sales increased 1.2% in the September quarter, to be 1.1% higher in year ended terms – the first annual increase since Q3 2023.
Headline company profits declined 4.6%, exceeding Westpac’s and the market’s expectation of a 0.7% increase over the September quarter. The decline in profits was driven by an 8.8%qtr fall in mining profits, on the back of weaker commodity prices. Mining profits have now 16.0% lower in annual terms.
Non-mining profits were softer than we expected, down 1.7%qtr to be 2.8% lower in annual terms. This was the first annual decline since the pandemic and shows that non-mining profit growth remains weak as domestic demand proves sluggish.
Growth in gross operating surplus in the National Accounts will be slightly higher due to the different treatment of inventory value adjustments between each release.
Nominal wage growth (that is the wages bill: hours worked times wages) was higher over the quarter, increasing 1.2% in the September quarter, following a 0.9%qtr increase in June.
Despite the slight increase, growth in nominal wages is well down on the September quarter 2023, where wages grew 2.5%qtr on the back of the larger than average 2022-23 Fair Work Commission minimum and award wage increase. As this outsized increase rolled out of the annual calculation, wages growth stepped down to 4.0%yr this quarter (from 5.4%yr in Q2) - the slowest year ended rise since the March quarter 2021 and around the pre-pandemic decade average of 3.9%yr. This suggests that wage pressures, at least in the private sector, are unlikely to be a significant source of cost pressures for the economy going forward.
Looking across industries, some of the largest increases were recorded in the non-market industries where private sector providers are heavily subsidised by government. Healthcare and education continue to lead the pack up 5.0%yr and 5.4%yr, respectively, followed by mining (5.1%yr) and manufacturing (4.8%yr), with the remaining industries recording subdued growth.
At face value the wages read is at odds with the expected 0.8% pick up in hours suggested by the labour force survey. This publication excludes farm and certain public sector wages (such as public administration and safety), which could be driving some of the increase in hours worked.
