Michael Chen

Michael has over 20 years of experience at the intersection of financial services (across banking, insurance and advisory) and sustainability. He is currently Executive Director, Head of ESG at Westpac, where he is responsible for ESG strategy and uplift across Westpac's institutional banking activities. Having been at Westpac for 6 years, he previously started and ran its international Sustainable Finance business, which includes many industry "firsts" in terms innovative sustainable finance structuring. Michael also developed and implemented Westpac's approach to ESG Risk Management, and is one of Westpac's lead contributors to the current and previous climate change action plans. Prior to Westpac, Michael spent a significant part of my career in Europe, advising the public and private sectors on financing climate solutions such as carbon capture & storage and renewable energy. This includes working at the World Economic Forum, where he led a project on scaling up private investment in low carbon infrastructure. He returned to Australia to assist with the implementation of the (ill-fated) carbon pricing mechanism, before joining the insurance (IAG) and banking sectors (Westpac) in senior ESG leadership roles. Michael holds a Masters in Sustainability Leadership from the University of Cambridge, and is also a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand.
