Michael Chen

Michael has over 20 years of experience at the intersection of financial services (across banking, insurance and advisory) and sustainability. As Westpac’s Acting Chief Sustainability Officer, Michael leads the Group’s Sustainability Strategy, with a particular focus on climate change, human rights and the emerging area of natural capital. Michael is passionate about the capacity of business to realise positive social and environmental impact and the integration of ESG into how we do business – and through this, create long-term value. Michael was previously Head of ESG Institutional Bank at Westpac, where he was responsible for ESG strategy and uplift across Westpac's institutional banking activities. He also established Westpac’s sustainable finance business. Prior to joining the bank in 2015, he held various senior finance and sustainability roles at PwC, IAG and the World Economic Forum and brings a background in project finance. Michael holds a Masters in Sustainability Leadership from the University of Cambridge and is also a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand.
